Hydroponics Market Overview and Introduction

Hydroponics a subset of hydroculture, is a soil-less farming method involving the cultivation of healthy plants through mineral nutrient solutions that are dissolved in water. The process of hydroponics requires only nutrients, water, and sunlight to grow plants. The plants grown using this method grow faster as compared to plants grown in the soil. The nutrients which are required for hydroponics are treated with water and then sent to the root system of the plant. Moreover, hydroponic farming requires less water when compared with traditional farming methods.

The global hydroponics market is driven by higher yield as compared to traditional techniques. Moreover, a rise in the consumption of exotic salad crops and the need for global food safety are playing a pivotal role in contributing to the extensive growth of the market. However, lack of scientific knowledge regarding soil-less agriculture system, lack of government policies, tax breaks in developing countries and high setup cost is likely to restrain market growth to a certain extent.

The global hydroponics market is segmented by type, equipment & input and region

Hydroponics Market by Type

Based on type, the market can be segmented into aggregate systems and liquid systems. The aggregate systems segment is categorized into EBB & flow systems, drip systems, and wick systems. Similarly, liquid systems is further categorized into deep water culture systems, Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), and aeroponics. Liquid hydroponic system is estimated to account for the largest market share.  The liquid hydroponic system assists in the active growth of the plant, as it provides the plant with direct access to the oxygen and mineral nutrient solutions. Moreover, systems such as Deep Water Culture (DWC) and Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) have been studied for applications in hybrid farming, combining aquaculture and hydroponics.

Hydroponics by Equipment & Input

The equipment & input segment can be bifurcated into two categories, viz. equipment & input. The equipment segment can be further categorized into HVAC, led grow light, control systems, irrigation systems, material handling, and other equipment. Similarly, the input segment is further segmented into nutrients and grow media. Nutrients are estimated to account for the largest share of the global hydroponics market. Nutrients form an integral part of hydroponic systems. There are two major types of nutrients used in hydroponics – macronutrients, and micronutrients.

Hydroponics Market by Region

The global hydroponics market can be segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Rest of the World (ROW). The global hydroponics market is dominated by and is followed by North America and Asia Pacific. Europe is anticipated to continue its dominance in the global hydroponics market during the forecast. The adoption of hydroponics has been the highest in the Netherlands, followed by Spain and Turkey. The vegetable and fruit crops grown in Europe using hydroponics include cucumber, tomatoes, roses, and pepper, among others. Rising awareness among consumers regarding the health benefits of greenhouse vegetables has led to the rise in the demand for hydroponics. However, North America is expected to witness the highest CAGR, with growth of the market centered in the U.S. and Canada.
